Dr. Amanda Fulton, Au.D., has worked in nearly every side of the hearing health world, from pediatric audiology at Yale New Haven Hospital to a stint on the manufacturer side of the industry. Now she's bringing all of that experience back into the clinic as she joins Fortell Audiology Greenwich.
Here's Dr. Fulton on her winding path through the industry, the LinkedIn post that put Fortell on her radar, and the demo that changed her perspective on what was possible for her patients.
Dr. Fulton: I was a pediatric account manager at Phonak, working with children’s hospitals and school systems across the East Coast and training audiologists in both clinical and educational settings.
Before that, I was a pediatric audiologist at Yale New Haven Hospital, working with cochlear implants, hearing aids, and bone-anchored devices, along with a lot of diagnostic testing. And before that, I was in an ENT private practice in Connecticut, working mostly with adults.
Dr. Fulton: No, and I love that Fortell allows me to marry both sides of my background. My experience on the manufacturer side gave me a really deep understanding of hearing technology and a lot of experience educating and training other audiologists. I became a go-to person for training on new products, so I developed a very strong understanding of hearing aid technology, fitting, programming, and how to translate complex technology into something that is meaningful for both clinicians and patients. Being able to bring that experience back into a patient-facing clinical setting is really exciting to me.
Dr. Fulton: My husband went to Carnegie Mellon with one of Fortell’s engineers, and he came across a post about the company on LinkedIn and asked if I’d ever heard of them. I hadn’t, so I looked into it and thought it was really interesting. At the time, there was only a New York City clinic, and I wasn’t looking to commute into the city every day.
Then a Greenwich opening came up while I was on maternity leave, right when I was thinking about getting back into a clinical setting somewhere closer to home. The timing just lined up.
"I went in expecting Fortell to be comparable to the technology I was already familiar with, and I came out genuinely excited about what Fortell was doing with AI and speech-in-noise."
Dr. Fulton: I went into it with a lot of experience with hearing technology and a pretty strong understanding of what I wanted to see from a hearing aid in a real-world environment. When I met with Fortell’s CEO, Matt, at the New York office, we did a side-by-side demo of my Phonaks and Fortell’s hearing aids out on the street. I was really impressed by what I experienced. I went in expecting Fortell to be comparable to the technology I was already familiar with, and I came out genuinely excited about what Fortell was doing with AI and speech-in-noise.
"There’s something really exciting about watching someone experience a meaningful difference in their hearing in real time."
Dr. Fulton: Even in my first few days [onboarding at Fortell Audiology NYC], watching people demo the hearing aids out on the street has been incredible. You don’t even need to ask how it went— their face says it all. They step out onto a loud street, try the AI mode, and just light up. There’s something really exciting about watching someone experience a meaningful difference in their hearing in real time. I can’t wait to see that happen again and again with patients in Greenwich.
